However, GimPhoto is still a quite complex package for beginners although there’s a very detailed user guide to help you get to grips with it. I believe GimpShop, which is an attempt to make gimp look/behave/layout more like photoshop, is an improvement, and I seem to remember either GimpShop or some other gimp spinoff (seashore or something) actually uses a native OSX gui which is much better, but I found it stopped working properly on Leopard or something. It's contrary to expectations and I feel like I'm jumping through hoops to make the simplest of things happen. It's NOT photoshop, so why am I complaining that it's not like photoshop? Because it's not easy. I would have used, but I couldn't even create a canvas set to milimeters, so fuck that. I'll probably end up leeching off the workplace photoshop tomorrow instead of hassling with this, but I really just hoped the free alternatives would be sufficient. I really want to take care of this tonight because it's a 5 minute job and I've been fucking around for 45 minutes. Layers snap to rulers, but rulers don't snap to shit. 'Gimpshop is an exceedingly powerful Photoshop look alike that has far more features than you, or most people you know, will ever use. So I try to center the damn thing, but rulers don't snap at the center. okay, I'll make the canvas larger, than keep a square layer as a template to show where the new image needs to be resized to. Sure, a lot of it is probably not being used to the program, but as what is understood to be the open source photoshop, you'd think they could have made some more effort into making basic things just work like you'd think. So in attempting to do these seemingly simple tasks, it's just one roadblock after the next. trying to work basic things, such as taking a selection from one window, making it a new layer if I would have to, and dragging it into a new canvas where I can resize it. It's the final stage after doing art in programs like Artrage. So after updating my computer a while back, I decided I didn't need a free photoshop (know'ma'sayin') anymore because free alternatives should be sufficient and I generally like to stay clean these days.Īll I use photoshop for is dragging layers into other open windows, cropping, resizing, and generally making things centered and the proper size for print.
